At Manston Primary School, we believe that reading is the foundation of all learning and a vital life skill. Our approach to reading is designed to inspire a lifelong love of books while ensuring that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader.
Our curriculum supports pupils at every stage of their reading journey—from early phonics in EYFS and KS1 through to rich, challenging texts in KS2. We use a structured and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics, alongside a carefully selected range of high-quality texts to foster both reading accuracy and a deep understanding of language.
Children are given regular opportunities to develop their reading skills through shared, guided, and independent reading, as well as through cross-curricular learning. Our aim is to ensure that all pupils leave Manston as enthusiastic, thoughtful readers who can confidently access the wider curriculum and the world around them.
We also recognise the importance of reading for pleasure. With inviting reading spaces, author visits, themed days, and strong links with families, we create a vibrant reading culture across the school.

School follows the Floppy's Phonics scheme for teaching our pupils to read. We follow their teaching approach and use their resources in school and for home reading. Further information on this scheme can be found in the presentation below and is shared with parents each year. The presentation and video below explain more about how Floppy's Phonics works and show some of the resources that your child will use at home and in school.
