Enrichment

Discovering interests, building confidence and broadening horizons.

At Manston Primary School, we want every pupil to enjoy learning, discover new interests and feel excited about their future. From stepping inside a planetarium to meeting people from different professions, our enrichment experiences bring learning to life and help pupils see what is possible.

These opportunities are part of our planned approach to personal development. Alongside our curriculum, assemblies and pastoral support, they help pupils develop the knowledge, confidence, independence and resilience they need as they grow.

Our approach: opportunities for every pupil

Our Manston Milestones set out the experiences pupils encounter as they move from Reception to Year 6. These build progressively, from exploring the local community and meeting visitors to taking on leadership roles, developing enterprise skills and experiencing residential adventures.

We plan opportunities that help pupils to:

  • Discover talents and interests in science, sport, music, the arts and beyond.

  • Work together, solve problems and persevere when something is challenging.

  • Speak confidently, listen carefully and respect different viewpoints.

  • Understand different cultures, beliefs and experiences.

  • Learn how to stay safe, healthy and increasingly independent.

  • Contribute to their community and develop ambitions for the future.

We want every pupil to take part. We monitor participation and work with families to address barriers, including providing adjustments, additional support and financial assistance where needed. Pupil feedback helps us review and improve our offer.

Our Personal Development Policy explains this approach in more detail.

Exploring future possibilities: Careers Day

“What could I become?” is a question with many exciting answers.

Our Careers Day introduces pupils to people from a wide range of professions. Through conversations, practical activities and opportunities to ask questions, pupils discover how different jobs contribute to our lives and communities.

Experiences are adapted for different ages, helping pupils connect their interests and learning with future possibilities. We challenge stereotypes and encourage pupils to keep an open mind about what they could achieve.

Watch our Careers Day video below for a glimpse of the day in action.

Curiosity, discovery and creative thinking

Science and STEM experiences encourage pupils to ask questions, investigate ideas and learn through experimentation.

Our WonderDome planetarium experience brings the wonder of space into school, sparking curiosity and inspiring further learning.

During Science Week and our egg-based STEM challenges, pupils explore problems, test ideas and consider what they could improve. These experiences give pupils opportunities to be creative, explain their thinking and discover that an unsuccessful attempt can be a useful step towards a solution.

Understanding and celebrating our diverse world

We help pupils develop respect for others and an understanding of the world beyond their own experiences.

Black History Month provides a focus for exploring Black history, achievements and contributions, supporting our wider teaching about diversity, equality and belonging throughout the year.

Through curriculum learning, assemblies, stories and discussion, pupils encounter different perspectives, reflect on fairness and learn why discrimination must be challenged.

Our Cultural Day provides opportunities for pupils to explore and celebrate different cultures, traditions and ways of life, including those represented within our school community. Through shared activities and discussion, pupils learn about one another, recognise similarities and differences, and develop curiosity and respect. It helps pupils take pride in their own heritage while valuing the experiences and identities of others.

Enterprise: the Fiver Challenge

Our Year 6 Fiver Challenge gives pupils opportunities to put enterprise skills into practice.

Working together, pupils develop ideas and make decisions about how to use a small starting budget. The project helps them explore budgeting, costs, pricing and selling, while developing teamwork, communication and responsibility.

It is a practical opportunity to use learning in a real context and experience the thinking, organisation and perseverance involved in bringing an idea to life.

Confidence, independence and staying safe

Personal development includes learning practical skills that pupils can use beyond school.

Cycle training, road safety education, swimming and water safety help pupils develop confidence and understand how to manage risks. Visitors and workshops reinforce age-appropriate messages about keeping themselves and others safe.

These experiences build on classroom learning and help pupils become increasingly independent.

Assemblies: shared values, thoughtful conversations

Our assemblies bring the school community together to reflect, celebrate and learn.

Whole-school and citizenship assemblies explore themes such as kindness, respect, resilience, wellbeing, online safety and British Values. Class discussions give pupils time to consider questions, explain their views and listen to others. Singing and celebration assemblies provide further opportunities to participate and recognise achievement.

Pupils take an active part through paired talk, questions and shared reflection. We teach them how to build on an idea, ask for clarification and disagree respectfully.

Assembly themes connect with everyday school life, helping pupils put shared values into practice in their friendships, learning and responsibilities.

Trips, clubs and experiences beyond the classroom

Educational visits help pupils make connections between classroom learning and the wider world. Every class has at least one curriculum-linked educational visit each year, with experiences building across pupils’ time at Manston.

Our wider offer includes museum and environmental visits, opportunities to explore contrasting places, sporting events, performances and residential experiences at Bewerley Park.

Clubs give pupils opportunities to develop interests, try something new and enjoy working with others. Music, sport and performance experiences help pupils build confidence and contribute to school and community life.

Pupil roles: taking responsibility and making a difference

Pupils play an active part in school life at Manston. Meaningful roles give them opportunities to develop confidence, leadership and teamwork while contributing to our school community.

These include:

  • School Council representatives, who share pupils’ views and ideas and contribute to discussions about school life.

  • Reading Ambassadors, who promote reading and encourage others to discover and enjoy books.

  • Peer mediators (Manston Mediators), who help pupils listen to one another and resolve everyday disagreements, with support from staff.

  • Lunchtime helpers, who support lunchtime routines and help create a welcoming, caring environment.

We provide different ways for pupils to become involved, including volunteering, applying and taking turns. Through these responsibilities, pupils learn to listen, act fairly, support others and understand that their contribution matters.
