Intensive Swimming Lessons

Dear Parent and Carer,

School have been able to organize some additional ‘intensive’ swimming sessions for our Year 5 and 6 who we believe cannot yet swim 25m unaided. I realise that some of our pupils may be nervous swimmers, but this is the ideal opportunity to help them gain confidence and make rapid progress in a safe and supportive environment.

Your child will attend 9 sessions in small groups with qualified instructors at John Smeaton. This intensive approach is highly effective at improving pupil’s confidence, stamina and ability. With Lockdown limiting the number of swimming session some of our pupils have experienced, we want to ensure we teach them a vital skill that could be lifesaving.

The lessons will take place between Monday 28th March and Friday 1st April and then after Easter. From the Tuesday 19th April to Friday 22nd April 2022. Pupils will leave school after dinner time and return before the end of the school day.

For each session the children will need:

  • A suitable swimming costume (Girls must wear full swimsuits and boys swim shorts above the knee),

  • To come to school in their swimsuits (‘Beach ready’ is the term used)

  • Goggles, if you want your child to wear them,

  • A plastic bag, to put all very wet stuff in at the end of the lesson. (This is not vital, but in practice does save the towel from being completely soaked in the bag),

  • Please remember to pack underwear for after their swim session,

  • Children will remove their over clothes at the poolside and put them in their bag (Please send a large shopping bag if their rucksack will not hold all their clothing, including coat and shoes).

On leaving the pool children will be taken by school staff to the changing rooms where they will have 10 minutes to dry and change into their clothes. Armbands will be provided at the pool for children who need them

I apologise for the timing of this letter. If you have any questions about these sessions please contact me to discuss them, I will be available at the end of school on Friday in the school hall. For those in need of a new costume I know that Decathlon in Leeds have a great range of swimming equipment they stock all year.

Yours Sincerely,

James Clay

Head Teacher.
